Throughout our Holocaust unit, we learned about the daily lives of many individuals who lived throughout the Holocaust. Some of these people survived to tell their horrid experiences while other died in the ghettos, cattle cars, or concentration camps. Approximately 6 million Jews died during the Holocaust, and our students honored their lives by collecting pennies: one penny to represent each life that was lost. We didn't reach 6 million pennies, but we were able to collect 115,140 pennies and display them in a fishbowl in the 8th grade pod area. In order to reach 6 million, we would need another 52 rooms filled with just as many pennies. Another way students honored the lives of Holocaust survivors and victims was by making posters that highlighted facts about their lives as well as other topics relating to the Holocaust. These are now displayed on the walls and windows of the 8th grade pods so that more students and visitors can read and learn about these amazing heroes of the Holocaust. We invite you all to come see our Holocaust exhibit. The exhibit will be available before or after school from today (Wednesday, May 25) until this Friday (May 27). Please check in with the front office before coming to the 8th grade pod to see the posters and pennies. Thank you to all the friends and family to donated so many pennies. Your donation helped students realize the magnitude and reality of the Holocaust. The money we collected will be sent to charity chosen by the 8th graders.
