This unit revolves around the essential question “What influences my identity?” We will read The Devil’s Arithmetic, by Jane Yolen, or the play version of The Diary of Anne Frank.

- Read a variety of picture books that depict the Holocaust and WWII
- Learn about Jewish culture and traditions
- Read The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen
- Watch clips from the following movies/resources:
- Fiddler on the Roof (PG)
- The Devil’s Arithmetic (PD-M)
- Informational video clips and pictures about the Holocaust from ushmm.org and sfi.usc.edu
- Research the life of a Holocaust victim/survivor

Final Project:
As we have read various Holocaust texts, we have discussed how identity is created or influenced by various life components. You will now have the opportunity to choose a person who experienced the Holocaust and research their life and things that influenced their identity. While time will be given in class to work on this project, it is expected that you take some time outside of class to do things that will enhance your poster (extra research, pictures, peer/parent editing, symbolic artistic representation, etc).
Remember to include the following in your poster:
You will also create an original artistic work that symbolizes either your person or some aspect of the Holocaust. Then type 1 paragraph explaining the symbolism of your creation. Some ideas include:
